The Surprising Power of 'Yes': How to Overcome What’s Holding You Back

Whether you’re aiming to start a new project, launch a business, or even take on a personal

challenge, mental barriers can often be one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome. They stop us

in our tracks, make us question ourselves and sometimes cause us to throw in the towel before we

even begin.

While mental barriers can be difficult to navigate, there are ways to help you overcome them, plus

cultivate a mindset that works in your favour, not against you. With this in mind, let’s explore five

practical ways to overcome mental blocks and start reaching your goals.

1. Recognise Self-Doubt and Confront It

Self-doubt is a common barrier that we all face. It's that voice inside that comes knocking and tells

you you're not good enough, smart enough or capable enough. The first step to overcoming this

barrier is to recognise it. When these thoughts arise, challenge them! Ask yourself: 'Is this true?'

'What evidence do I have that I can’t achieve this?' Most of the time, the fears we have are

unfounded. By confronting your self-doubt head-on, you take away its power.

Action Tip: Try journaling your thoughts of self-doubt and actively write down reasons why they

aren’t true. You can also take the opportunity to reflect on what you have achieved and are proud

of. This helps you build a more realistic and positive perspective.

2. Set Clear, Achievable Goals

Often, we get stuck because our goals feel too big or too vague. To move past this, break down your

goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. Not only does this make them feel less overwhelming,

but each small victory gives you the confidence to keep going. By setting clear, achievable goals, you

create a roadmap that makes your path forward much clearer.

Action Tip: Use the SMART goal-setting method—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and

Time-bound. Write down your goal, break it into smaller tasks and assign deadlines.

3. Cultivate an Entrepreneurial Mindset

An entrepreneurial mindset isn't just for starting businesses—it's about seeing challenges as

opportunities and being adaptable in your thinking. People with this mindset are more likely to take

risks, embrace uncertainty and bounce back from failure. They don’t see obstacles as dead-ends but

as stepping stones. This shift in thinking can help you push through mental barriers and stay focused

on the big picture.

Action Tip: Reflect on your setbacks and view them as learning opportunities. Ask yourself, 'What

did I gain from this experience?' instead of 'What did I lose?'

4. Embrace the Power of 'Yes'

Saying 'yes' can open doors you never expected. More often than not, the mental barriers we face

are built around fear—fear of failure, rejection or the unknown. But when you say yes' to

opportunities, it gives you a chance to grow and explore new possibilities. This doesn't mean saying

‘yes’ to everything but choosing to say ‘yes’ to things that align with your values and goals.

Action Tip: Next time an opportunity presents itself, ask yourself, 'What’s the worst that could

happen?' Often, the potential rewards outweigh the risks, and saying 'yes' could change everything.

5. Seek Support and Accountability

Sometimes, mental barriers feel too big to tackle on our own. That’s where having a support system

comes in. Whether it’s a mentor, coach or friend, having someone to talk to can make a huge

difference. They can offer a fresh perspective, hold you accountable and remind you of your

strengths when you’re feeling low. In my role as an Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile® (EMP)

Practitioner, I’ve seen first-hand how valuable support and accountability can be in breaking through

mental barriers.

Action Tip: Share your goals with someone you trust and ask them to check in on your progress. This

creates external motivation and keeps you on track.

Your mindset is a truly powerful tool. By addressing mental barriers and cultivating a positive

mindset, you can unlock your full potential and achieve your goals. If you’re ready to take that step

but feel unsure about where to start, I’d love to help you identify your strengths and help you create a

tailored roadmap to reach them.
